The American Kennel Club (AKC) first recognized the Boston Terrier as a breed in 1893. Named after its hometown - Boston, Massachusetts - the Boston Terrier is an all-American breed. You would never know this from their calm and loving personality, but they were originally bred to fight, as in dogfighting. Thankfully, that's a closed chapter in the story now.

The servants of wealthy gentlemen in England bred the breed by mating English bulldogs with the (now extinct) white English terrier. These bulldog-terrier dogs arrived in America in 1870, brought by Robert C. Hooper. Hooper crossed the imported dogs with the French Bulldog and thus the official Boston Terrier was born. This was not originally the name of the tribe.

In the late 1800's they were known as American Bull Terriers or Roundheads. The Bull Terrier doesn't last because there was already a breed of Bull Terrier with a much longer snout. Although they are called Boston Terriers, technically they are not classified as terriers according to the AKC.

People sometimes confuse Boston with French Bulldogs ("Frenchies"). They look alike, but Boston Terriers have pointy ears and French Bulldogs have rounded ears.

This little performer always looks ready to hit the main stage in his black and white Boston Terrier tuxedo! It's like having a comedian in the house! If you need a smile, Boston will give you one. Bostonians rarely bark aimlessly. They have a loud bark when they choose to use it, and although they are small, they are also noisy and are considered excellent watchdogs. They are very protective of their families and loyal to all members.

They have a fun variety of funny noises on the comedy front, from their infamous loud snorts to sneezing, howling, squealing and 'behind' squeaks. They are cuddly people who love regular petting sessions. They are natural diggers, and if they aren't trapped in your lap, they will likely bury themselves and squeeze into a small space that feels like a protected burrow.

Boston Terriers live to make their owners happy. They have a cute look when they feel guilty. And even if they don't know what happened, if your dog senses that you're not pleased, he may look guilty, even if that's not the reason he's upset. Either that or you still don't realize what a mess they've gotten themselves into.

If the dog smells awful, a bath to wash off any dirt and wetness may be the solution. If that doesn't work, the vet may need to take a look at your pup to check for fungus, teeth, or ear infections.

Their black and white coat only needs an excellent brushing about once a week. Whether with a soft bristle brush or a grooming mitt, they'll love the extra attention and pets!

Your nails will need to be trimmed every month or two. If you're not sure whether to brush, if you can hear their nails tapping and tapping the floor when they walk, they're overdue, and every few weeks, gently clean Boston's ears.

Many Boston Terriers seem to be smiling happily at you. You have to take care of your pearly whites. Teeth should be cleaned more often than other grooming tasks because Bostons are prone to dental problems. Two to three times a week, use a baby toothbrush or soft washcloth to apply special dog toothpaste on and around all teeth.
