HepokémonThe world, as fans know, is very set in its ways. Whilesome mechanics have changed since the days of Generation I,many things remain exactly as they always were. On the one hand, a series of tough trainers that specialize in certain types of Pokémon will appear throughout the game to test the player.gym leaders,Kahunas... no matter what you call them, they're not kidding.
RELATED:
Em, the residenttype of waterThe Gym Leader is Hulbury'sIn this. This fan favorite fighterhe appears in four matches with the player over the course of the game, using a total of nine different species of Pokémon along the way. Considering how "repeat" Pokémon have changed and improved between battles, let's rank each creature in your arsenal!
THE GAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY
9 in between
That's right, friends. In terms of the overall don't be pathetic factor, a lowly Goldeen is probably the weakest Pokémon Nessa brings to a battle. However, it only appears once before evolving, so it's nice to see it learn the error of its ways quickly.
Nessa uses her Goldenen during the original Gym Battle with the player, as part of her team of three Pokémon. It's level 22 and features the clearly questionable moveset of Water Pulse, Horn Attack, Agility, and Whirlpool.
8 Arrokuda
In the region of Galar there arethere are many new and unique Pokémon to be found, as well as some that are definitely not that unique.Arrokuda might seem like a very generic Pokémon, but that's only because... well, it is.
With a base Attack of 63 and Speed of 66, it's a decently offensive Physical Water-type for this stage of the game. In terms of evolution, he really is a force to be reckoned with, but Nessa doesn't get her hands on a Barraskewda until a later rematch. For now, her Aqua Jet, Fury Attack, Whirlpool, and Bite Arrokuda are a little above Goldeen, but not by much.
7 Seaking
On Nessa's Mondaysword and shieldbattle, the Pokémon on your original team have certainly grown a lot. That weak Golden from the gym battle? Now it's a majestic Seaking, folks.
RELATED:
Let's be honest with ourselves: a Seaking is still a Seaking. Criminally below average since Generation I, this was completely overshadowed bya bunch of powerful Pokémon from Kantofor over two decades. Still, Nessa is level 52 in this battle and has a decent moveset of Waterfall, Aqua Ring, Smart Strike, and Megahorn, so she could deal a surprising amount of damage.
6 Quagsire
Nessa only uses a Quagsire once, in her second match at Wyndon Stadium (in the Tournament of Champions). By virtue of its typing, it is immune to Electric, which is a huge advantage for any Water-type team. Unfortunately, it's also 4x weaker to Grass in return, so the defensive buff for the team is eradicated.
What does Nessa's Quagsire bring to the table? A solid offensive moveset from Scald, Earthquake, Ice Punch, and Toxic, though this creature doesn't really have the offensive power to pull it off. He'll also have a hard time poisoning things for his allies' benefit (more on that in the next entry) because he'll inadvertently burn them with Scald most of the time. After all, if there's one thing Scald loves to do, it's burn things.
5 toxápex
Until Nessa. We see him trying to create synergy between his Toxic Quagsire and Venous Shock Toxapex, and we appreciate that. If he had the AI to take advantage of such a strategy (Venoshock doubles its power if the target is poisoned), we would be shocked and terrified. Mainly because it would mean that Game Freak had developed robotic intelligence to the level of Skynet. Arnold Schwarzenegger got too old to rescue us again.
On top of all that, Nessa's Toxapex was also added to her squad for the final match of the Tournament of Champions. It's an annoyingly standard set of tanks, much like you'd see in a competitive match: Liquidation, the aforementioned Venoshock, Baneful Bunker, and Recover. A solid effort, but the player should be able to get rid of him quickly witha suitably strong electrical movement, like always. Psychic and Ground are also options here, with Toxapex's additional poison type.
4 golisópod
You wouldn't think to look at the tiny speck of nothing that Wimpod is, but its evolution is one of the most powerful water types to have been added to the mix in quite some time. Golisopod is a Water/Bug-type Pokémon with high Attack and Defense, solid Special Defense, and a good arsenal of strong STAB moves.
RELATED:Pokémon: Best Bug-type Pokémon of each generation, ranked
This mighty Pokémon makes two appearances on Nessa's teams: in the first and second matches at Wyndon Stadium. He is level 51 in the former and level 60 in the latter, boasting an unchanged moveset in both: Swords Dance, Liquidation, First Impression, Shadow Claw. Certainly a solid member of the team (without a weakness to Grass), though Nessa's last three Pokemon are arguably stronger.
3 pelíper
Unless you are Mr. Briney was probably indifferent to Wingull and Pelipper until recently. These water/flying Pokemon weren't particularly bad, but their super average stats meant there was always a better team choice for whatever role you wanted them to fill.
What has changed? Pelipper gained the skill Drizzle. As an automatic rain generator, it has become very valuable in the metagame (although Politoed's return inthe Isle of Armor expansionwill cut your wings a bit), and Nessa's Pelipper has a surprisingly competitive set. He uses his two parties in the Wyndon stadium (like Golisopod, he's at level 51 in the first and 60 in the second), and adjusts his set of moves for maximum destruction, at least, that's probably the idea, in the second. I originally had Water Pulse, Air Slash, Tailwind, and Roost, but Nessa switched Air Slash to Hurricane (which never fails when it rains) for the second battle. If someone were to tell this supposed Water-type expert that Surf exists (she clearly knows Scald exists), we would be in real trouble.
2 barraskewda
At the beginning of this summary, we were a little sarcastic with Arrokuda. That's because, at first glance, it looks like the most generic marine Pokémon a trainer can find.to fishDon't disrespect or underestimate this, because once it evolves, it's a monstrous creature that presumably could swallow your entire family tree in one bite.
Barraskewda must not be disturbed. She's a true glass cannon, with her base 123 Attack and 136 Speed, and Nessa's moveset of Liquidation, Throat Chop, Drill Run, and Ice Fang can be deadly to unsuspecting players. Interestingly though, he only uses Barraskewda once, in the first Wyndon Stadium battle. However, all things considered, it's still one of the most powerful Pokémon he uses. Only his ace in the hole really trumps him.
1 terrifying
allsword and shieldGym Leaders have their unique Pokémon. For Nessa, it's Drednaw, who always lets go when the battles get tough. Unsurprisingly, he uses it in all four battles he participates in during the main game (including the Max Raid against Gyarados in his gym).
In your Gym Battle, your Drednaw is level 24, uses Water Gun, Bite, Razor Shell and Headbutt, and can only Dynamax. In later battles, it's level 53, then 62. His moveset becomes Liquidation, Rock Tomb, Crunch, and his signature move Jaw Lock (which prevents switching), though in the Max Raid battle he has Body Slam over Crunch for some reason. In these later battles, it is capable of Gigantamaxing, proving its status as Nessa's ace and best Pokémon.
