Not all anime come to an end. Here are 10 great anime series that ended before they even got to the best part!
While the world ofanimesThe production follows very different rules from American TV series, but there is still one end result that every fan fears: an unfinished series. It's rare for anime to be "cancelled" the way American shows are canceled - i.e., to be pulled from the schedule and ended halfway through, in part because an anime's success is determined more by Blu-ray sales than ratings. . Still, it's extremely common for an anime series to start adapting a light novel or manga series, only to stop abruptly. Some of these series are very high quality, but for some reason, only a small part of the overall story is adapted.
What follows is a list of 10 highly regarded anime series that ended up with plenty of material for adaptation, spanning a variety of genres. Since it's nearly impossible to rank things that are so incredibly different from one another, the items on this list are not ranked in any specific way.

10 Dead Man's Wonderland
Dead Man's Wonderlandis a 2011 series about an ultraviolent prison system where inmates with blood powers known as Ramos do Pecado are forced to compete in gladiator fights for the entertainment of the masses. The protagonist Ganta Igarashi is an ordinary high school student who sees his class being massacred by a mysterious figure and has a strange diamond implanted inside him. Investigators quickly pin the crime on the innocent boy, sending him to the deadly prison/theme park known as Deadman Wonderland. Ganda must fight in these gladiatorial games to survive, as well as navigate prison culture as he tries to find a way to clear his name. While the premise had potential, the series ended after 12 episodes (plus a later OVA), covering around 20 chapters, with over half of the manga's story to tell.
9 Ranma 1/2

The story follows Ranma, a boy who during a trip to China falls into a cursed spring where a girl drowned, causing him to transform into a girl every time he throws cold water on her. Hijinks happen, of course, but the anime's story abruptly ends when Ranma's mother enters the story. what happened was thatRanma 1/2The anime picked up the manga, necessitating the creation of the filler, but the production studio went bankrupt soon after, leaving the story forever unfinished. The manga continued for another three years after the anime ended.
8 fruit basket
Fruits Basket is a romantic comedy/slice of lifestory with supernatural elements. It follows Tohru Honda, a girl made homeless by cruel relatives after the tragic death of her mother, as she meets the Sohma family, who are cursed to transform into different Chinese zodiac creatures when stressed.fruit basketIt was first adapted into an anime in 2001, which ran for 26 episodes before being abruptly stopped. The anime director and manga creator reportedly had major creative differences, resulting in mangaka Natsuki Takaya not liking this first adaptation. Although the 2001 anime never continued, fans finally got a second full adaptation.fruit basketem 2019.
7 spice and wolf
spice and wolfis a fantasy series about merchant Kraft Lawrence, who travels the world selling his wares until he ends up in the town of Pasloe, where an ancient goddess known as Holo was once worshipped. The Holo was sealed and inadvertently released by Lawrence. she then asks to travel with him and see how the world changed while she was sealed away. The anime had two 12-episode seasons, aired in 2008 and 2009, but then abruptly stopped. Ospice and wolfHowever, the light novel series was twenty-four books long, meaning that there is a huge amount of content that was never adapted, which is unfortunately common in series based on light novels.
6 Kaze no Stigma
Also based on a series of light novels,Kaze no Stigmafollows Kazuma, a boy exiled from his clan because he was defeated in a match for possession of a legendary sword that would make him the clan's heir. Throughout his exile, Kazuma mastered Wind Magic and eventually returned home, though not for any major confrontation, but simply for a demon-slaying show. At the same time, though, Kazuma's family members start getting murdered, and the culprit appears to be using Wind Magic. It was adapted into a 24-episode series in 2007, covering several of the main story's 6 light novels. Unfortunately, its authorkaze without stigmaAs for Takahiro Yamato's light novels, he died in 2009, which means this is a story that never had a chance to end well.
5 No game No life
Another series that started out as light novels,No game No lifefollows Sora and Shiro, two brothers, as they win a chess match against the god of games, which takes them to a new world where all matters are decided by high stakes games. The brothers conspire to take over the world using their gaming skills and become the new gaming gods.No game No lifereceived a 12-episode anime in 2014 at the height of the series' popularity, but was completely withdrawn thereafter. The series would get a prequel film,No Game No Life: Zero, in 2017, but the anime's story never got a proper conclusion. The anime only covers the first three volumes, while the movie covers the sixth volume, leaving out volumes 4 and 5.
4 Noise!
The pattern continues withNoise, another series that began as light novels.NoiseIts story is complex, told in a non-linear fashion with cutscenes spanning three periods of the anime. The 2007 anime ran for 13 episodes and is reasonably convincing, with an additional 3 bonus episodes adding more detail. However, again, this is just the tip.Noiseiceberg; by this point, there are 22 light novel volumes, often identified by the year in which they are set, spanning from 1705 to 2002. The original anime was highly regarded, particularly for its music, so it's a shame the series didn't have it. been able to continue to adapt to this totally wild world.
3 party master
An older manga series fromHiro Mashima da Fairy Tail,party masterit was an amazing fantasy series with great ideas. The English version of the anime also featured an opening theme by the band Ska Reel Big Fish. The anime ran for 51 episodes, which seems pretty respectable, but those 51 episodes only covered about a third of the manga, which ran for another three years after the anime ended. Mashima has a special fondness forparty master, and often hoped that the series would have a complete adaptation. 2 A Melancolia de Haruhi Suzumiya

1 bubblegum crisis
By far the oldest example on this list,gum crisisis an OVA (Original Video Animation, similar to direct-to-video) series that ran from 1987 to 1991. The series lasted only 8 episodes, but is considered highly influential, particularly in the realm of cyberpunk anime.gum crisisit's also unique in that it's an original anime, not adapted from manga or light novels, so there's no telling where the story would have gone. It is known that more episodes were planned, but a legal dispute between the two studios that owned the rights together meant that the series never had a proper ending.gum crisisfinally saw a reboot,Gum Crisis: Tokyo 2040, released from 1998 to 1999, and many consider this version superior. Still, it's hard not to imagine what ending the original series could have planned.
Unlike most American TV shows, anime's penchant for adapting to other media means that dedicated fans can still find out what happened in the (most) canceled anime series, but that doesn't do much to soften the blow of knowing. that this will never happen. finish on screen.
